Understanding Ho'oponopono: Subconscious Memories, Personal Responsibility & Emotional Release

Ho'oponopono is based on the understanding that we are interconnected and that our experiences, thoughts, emotions, and memories influence how we perceive and interact with the world around us.

Modern Ho'oponopono teachings draw from an updated interpretation of an ancient Hawaiian reconciliation practice. This approach focuses on the belief that memories and subconscious conditioning can influence our thoughts, reactions, relationships, and recurring life experiences.

The Role of Subconscious Memories

Our minds are constantly processing information, experiences, and thoughts, much of which occurs outside our conscious awareness. Memories and learned patterns can influence how we interpret situations, respond emotionally, and make decisions.

Sometimes, an experience in the present can activate an old emotional memory or belief. Without realizing it, we may respond through familiar patterns developed during earlier experiences.

For example, unresolved feelings associated with rejection, abandonment, fear, guilt, or inadequacy may influence how we approach relationships, financial decisions, and everyday challenges.

In modern Ho'oponopono teachings, these recurring patterns are sometimes described as subconscious memories or programs. The intention is to bring awareness to these patterns and work toward releasing their emotional influence rather than continuing to repeat familiar responses.

Taking Responsibility for Your Personal Experience

An important principle in modern Ho'oponopono is personal responsibility.

This philosophy encourages us to examine our own thoughts, beliefs, emotional responses, and behaviors rather than focusing exclusively on external circumstances or other people's actions.

Taking responsibility does not mean that you caused everything that happens to you, that you are responsible for another person's harmful behavior, or that you should blame yourself for difficult experiences.

Instead, it means recognizing that while we cannot control everything that happens around us, we can take responsibility for how we process our experiences, what beliefs we continue to carry, and how we choose to move forward.

Within this philosophy, challenges can become opportunities for greater self-awareness, emotional release, and personal transformation.

The Concept of Divine Intelligence

Certain modern Ho'oponopono teachings incorporate the concept of Divine Intelligence, referring to a higher spiritual intelligence, divine presence, or universal source of wisdom.

According to this spiritual perspective, there is a greater intelligence beyond the limitations of our conscious thinking. Practitioners use the four statements as an expression of surrender, forgiveness, gratitude, and love, with the intention of releasing subconscious memories and patterns that no longer serve them.

Rather than attempting to intellectually analyze every thought or find an answer to every problem, this approach encourages individuals to become aware of their internal experiences and allow space for spiritual guidance and personal clarity.

The concept of Divine Intelligence is a spiritual belief rather than a scientifically established mechanism for erasing memories or resolving external circumstances.

The Four Statements & Their Meaning

The modern Ho'oponopono practice is commonly associated with four statements:

I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.

These statements represent the intention to acknowledge, forgive, express gratitude, and reconnect with love.

Within this philosophy, they are directed toward the memories, emotional patterns, and experiences that an individual wishes to release.

The statements are understood as a way of shifting one's internal relationship with difficult experiences, rather than blaming oneself or attempting to control other people.

Releasing Old Memories & Repeating Patterns

One of the central ideas in modern Ho'oponopono is that unresolved memories and subconscious conditioning can continue influencing our lives when similar thoughts or circumstances activate familiar emotional responses.

For example, a person may repeatedly experience relationship difficulties because certain beliefs about love, rejection, or self-worth influence the way they approach relationships.

Another person may struggle with confidence because earlier experiences of criticism or rejection continue to shape their self-perception.

From the Ho'oponopono perspective, the intention is to bring awareness to these internal patterns and use forgiveness, gratitude, and love as a means of changing one's relationship with them.

The objective is not simply to cover up a problem or temporarily distract yourself from it, but to recognize the underlying beliefs and emotional responses that may be contributing to recurring difficulties.

Ho'oponopono & the Inner Child

This philosophy can also be incorporated into inner child exploration and reparenting.

Many of the beliefs we carry into adulthood originate from childhood experiences, family relationships, and the emotional environments in which we were raised.

When early emotional needs were unmet, certain beliefs and protective behaviors may develop and continue into adulthood.

Through the integration of Ho'oponopono and inner child work, clients are encouraged to explore these experiences, develop compassion toward their younger selves, and recognize patterns that may no longer serve their present identity.

This process complements reparenting by encouraging a healthier internal relationship built around self-acceptance, reassurance, emotional awareness, and self-love.

How This Philosophy Is Applied in the Mentoring Program

Within my mentoring program, Ho'oponopono is incorporated as a spiritual and reflective modality that complements:

  • Subconscious reprogramming and belief transformation.

  • Inner child exploration and emotional reparenting.

  • Shadow work and recognition of recurring patterns.

  • Forgiveness and emotional processing.

  • Self-love and identity revision.

  • Relationship and family-pattern exploration.

  • Gratitude and personal awareness.

The focus is to help clients recognize how past experiences may continue influencing their present thoughts, emotional responses, and behaviors. From there, we work toward developing healthier beliefs, releasing outdated conditioning, and establishing a new self-concept.

The Overall Intention

The central philosophy of modern Ho'oponopono is that we can begin changing our relationship with our experiences by approaching them through awareness, responsibility, forgiveness, gratitude, and love.

Rather than allowing old memories and beliefs to continually influence our present identity, we learn to recognize them, question their influence, and consciously develop new ways of thinking and responding.

You are not your past experiences. You are not the beliefs you developed during difficult moments. You have the ability to recognize old patterns, change your relationship with them, and consciously create a different way of experiencing yourself and your life.

Honoring Morrnah Nalamaku Simeona

We honor and acknowledge Morrnah Nalamaku Simeona (1913–1992), a Native Hawaiian Kahuna Lapaʻau who developed Self I-Dentity Through Ho'oponopono (SITH), a modern individualized approach inspired by the traditional Hawaiian practice of Ho'oponopono.

Her work helped bring this spiritual problem-solving and self-reflection practice to individuals around the world. Her teachings emphasized personal responsibility, forgiveness, reconciliation, inner reflection, and the restoration of harmony.

At Create A New You Coaching, we acknowledge Morrnah Simeona's contribution and honor the Hawaiian origins of this practice. Our mentoring curriculum incorporates selected Ho'oponopono-inspired principles as part of a broader approach to self-reflection, emotional release, inner-child exploration, forgiveness, and subconscious repatterning.

With gratitude and respect, we acknowledge Morrnah Nalamaku Simeona and the cultural tradition from which this practice originated.
